April 2022: Organist for Election Dinner of Worshipful Company of World Traders, Merchant Taylors’ Hall

Merchant Taylors’ Hall is unique among City of London Livery Company halls to have a surviving pipe organ. The organ was originally built by Renatus Harris for the now-demolished St Dionis Backchurch. It was then transferred to Darenth Training College in Dartford, before the existing pipework was incorporated into the current organ at Merchant Taylors’ Hall.

It is believed that this hall is where the National Anthem was sung for the first time, at that time to the words “God save great George, our King”, to refer to King George II.

On this occasion, Julian played, among other repertoire, the National Anthem for the Loyal Toast, preceded by an organ fanfare.

In these photos, Julian is wearing a Livery gown and medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, with a hood of a Fellow of the Fraternity of Saint Cecilia (FFSC).

October 2021: Pianist for Bowden Charter Dinner of Worshipful Company of Marketors, Haberdashers’ Hall

This event is named after Reginald Bowden, the first Master Marketor, at the Company’s foundation as a Guild in 1975, and commemorates the granting of a Royal Charter to the Marketors’ Company in 2010.

Julian played the top table party in to dinner to the March from Scipio by Handel. After dinner, Julian played “Drink to me only” as the port was being served.

August 2021: Pianist for Annual Dinner of Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers, Barber-Surgeons’ Hall

It was good to be back at an in-person City event with a venue at full capacity and free from social distancing restrictions!

This event was the Annual Dinner of the Master Tyler and Bricklayer, Dr Michel Saminaden.

The top table party processed in to the Tylers and Bricklayers’ March, composed by Edward Nesbit.

At a piano recital after dinner, Julian played Wedding Day at Troldhaugen by Edvard Grieg, and Summertime from “Porgy and Bess” by George Gershwin.

The Tylers and Bricklayers’ Company is ranked 37 in order of precedence among Livery Companies. Its origins go back to the 15th century and it has a Royal Charter dated 1568.

July 2021: Organist and pianist for wedding reception of the Reverend Benjamin Weitzmann and Mrs Elizabeth Weitzmann at Merchant Taylors’ Hall

This event, postponed from January 2021, was one of the first in-person City events since the lifting of Coronavirus social restrictions.

Uniquely among Livery Company halls, Merchant Taylors’ Hall has a working organ. It was the last organ to be built by Renatus Harris, in 1722, originally for the church of St Dionis Backchurch (later pulled down). The current organ in the Hall was installed in 1966; it was built by Noel Mander and incorporated much of the pipework from Harris’ organ.

It is believed that the first time the British National Anthem (then, “God save great George our King”) was sung was in Merchant Taylors’ Hall. On this evening, the National Anthem was played on the organ to accompany the Loyal Toast.

Each year, for the tenure of that year’s Master, the Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards issues a specially themed twin pack of playing cards. This year’s theme commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Moon landings.
